Performance-tuning

Even modern database and reporting systems still offer sufficient room for improvement. Generally, performance optimization is a recursive process, we optimized the system, observe the effects and optimize again. To ensure that this cycle does not last forever, we define a goal, once this is achieved; the optimization cycle is considered complete.

The improvement in speed of all time-critical SQL statements by 50% and the even use of the hard drives and CPUs are too often intended objectives in the database area. Ultimately, the improvements to the server response time, reflected the overall user response time.

Starting points for the optimization are usually the server applications, the kernel of the operating system, the server's hardware (CPU, RAM, hard disk ,...) as well as the client, the network and the configuration of the server itself.

 For more than 15 years ISR has operated successfully in the "tuning relational databases" environment. Both in consulting and in training, our field staff is in demand by manufacturers such as IBM or Oracle when they themselves experience staff shortages. Titles such as "Fastest International DBA" as well as numerous certifications in this field show that we understand our tools. Ultimately, this benefits our customers, most of who have been with ISR for more then 10 years and have not needed to purchase new hardware, because our experts were able to optimize their data base systems.

In many SAP^® BW implementations, the actual benefit and the usage in the departments stay well below initial expectations.

Common problems include long waiting times while polling data from reports or long load times, which lead to the fact that the system is used infrequently in the departments. Generally the problem is not with the hardware. It is often more a problem of training and knowledge. By optimizing the data model and report designs as well as the existing SAP BW settings and optimization of the technical parameters, most problems can be solved by ISR.

Especially the optimization of performance through remodeling the data model is a special area of ​​our consultants. Many times this has saved companies from having to upgrade their hardware systems.

A major complaint in the Cognos environment is the slow response time during complex reports and multidimensional analysis. Next to the hardware, the data modeling, the type of data storage (OLAP, ROLAP, InMemory, ..) and the database configurations are most often optimized. But also the distribution of Cognos BI services or the configuration of the services through the ideal parameters is often optimized. When performance tuning, one should also consider the expanded infrastructure such as SAN, RAID configuration and network connectivity.
